The d&b SL Series joins Rosalía for the closing shows of her sensational world tour.
2019 confirmed the meteoric rise of Rosalía. After 41 concerts, over seven million followers on Instagram and myriad of awards received, the Spanish artist has enthralled audiences and critics with her fusion of flamenco and urban rhythms.
As a grand finale of her world tour "El Mal Querer", Rosalia performed to sell-out crowds in Barcelona and Madrid. Two concerts in Barcelona and another one in Madrid saw the more than 47,000 audience transported by the musical phenomenon and global star that this new-flamenco singer has become in just a year and a half.
Jose Mourín, System Tech and Carlos del Valle, Monitor Engineer, among other great professionals, were in charge of the design for the show. d&b's rental partner Fluge Audiovisuales was chosen as the sound equipment supplier for all the three dates. They chose to use the d&b GSL and KSL-Series for the shows to share Rosalia’s passion-filled high-energy performance to the audiences with a clear and even sound.
“We were working in venues with remarkably complex acoustics, so our main challenge was to minimize the reflections and cover each listening area with direct sound”, explains José Mourín.
Power under control
Mourín continues: “The constant directivity control, specifically for low frequencies, was the main reason that we decided to use d&b's SL-Series.”
Del Valle concurs about directivity control being the essential feature of d&b’s SL-Series that allowed them to cope with the characteristics of the venues for these concerts: the Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona and the WiZink Center in Madrid.
The SL-Series is characterized by a market leading step up in system performance, significant headroom down to the lowest frequencies, and enhanced high frequency resolution.
“As the monitor technician, the most relevant issue for me was the directivity and the control of the sound that the equipment would deliver towards the stage, both at high and low frequencies”, adds Carlos del Valle.
Another important challenge for the team was to achieve a quieter stage, clean of reflections.
“The cardiod performance of d&b’s SL-Series made a huge advantage - keeping the stage clean and focusing the energy where it was needed, both for TOPs and SUBs. To merge sources has never been easier”, stresses Mourín.
Fluge AV also used d&b’s ArrayProcessing to further optimize the systems performance. The ArrayProcessing function within the ArrayCalc simulation software uses an optimization algorithm to determine tailored filters to help control the behavior of a d&b line array system across an entire listening area and thus create even sound coverage for the whole audience.
“ArrayProcessing was a very useful tool to choose the planes where we wanted to have less impact, explains Mourín.
The last leg of the “El Mal Querer’ tour was a major success and the SL-Series had a big role to play.
"The SL-Series from d&b brought two main values to the concert space: its sound quality and the direct control of the dispersion” sums up del Valle.
